Wellingtonia Textured and Dyed Bowl

The bowl is Wellingtonia as it is known in the UK, giant redwood in its native home (sequoiadendron giganteum for those that speak latin!). Although not native to the UK, these trees can be found growing in many parts of the country.

The bowl was textured by removing the soft wood between the growth rings, sandblasting and and finished with a white wood stain. Approximate size is 12" diameter.

A friend borrowed the bowl for a photography project and this is the result!
The texturing and form combination are amazing!

congratulations Paul, National Geographic has articule on redwoods this month, that is California redwoods, nice to know that they are grown other places

Some of the best old growth redwoods that you can still visit are in Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park of California. I just came back from Washington via coastal route 101 and couldnt pass up spending a night camping under these giants. I just posted some picture of them to my facebook page. I really like this image.
