Symposiums are a great place to buy a lathe if you have a way to haul it home.

The vendors don't want to ship the lathes home.
At the very least the companies will sell the lathe with no shipping. That can save on the order of $700-800 on a big machine.

Most vendors sell their lathes ahead of time customized for the new owner.
Jet powermatic used to not presell and I think they have continued that tradition. Their machines have few options and the powermatic managers I worked with wanted to have them available for sale at the symposium.
