I can’t answer your question about turning it, but in my experience (at least around here) that kind of formation usually results from a vine growing up the tree, then being removed or dying and leaving the tree twisted like that.
They will usually have big bark inclusions that can result in flying chunks of tree when you start to turn it. (DAMHIK) Use care in how the wood is mounted and its soundness.
I'd need to walk around the tree and think deep thoughts with a couple of beers and one of your cigars. Good chance a show-stopper TALL VASE is hiding.
And to be honest, I can't imagine it NOT being a great piece - depends on how much you want to wrap yourself around one log.
