Cherry platter just over 16" in diameter. It was a crotch piece and wood density caused a minor weight imbalance. I used lye dissolved in water and then saturated the piece. I believe due to the differences in density in the wood I obtained a wide variety of hues. Finished with a satin lacquer.
Hello from the UP Roger. I love the colors of the wood and the rings in your platter. What does the lye do?

Marc:

First of all, lye is very caustic, and requires a little bit of safety procedures prior to using. Lye is one of the cleaning agents and soap, but the lye that's available now is a drain cleaner.

If you set a finished piece of cherry in the direct sunlight for a long time (possibly years) it would have the same effect. Do a Google search on "Cherry & Lye" and you'll find a ton of information.

I've also tried putting Min Wax "Red Chestnut" on the cherry after lye treatment dries, so far it's come out as a very deep rich mahogany appearance. I hope this helps.

Vern:

The missing spot is where crotch came into play. Besides Pac-Man it almost looks like the mouth of a piranha.
