Over the years, I've turned quite a few quilted maple bowls, and I don't recall any of them without difficulty getting nice clean cuts without tearout. To be sure, it can be done, and it takes more than sharp tools and good presentation. No question those things are part of the overall equation, but it takes the "spiritual" element, as well. Some people might alternatively call it "the Zen of turning, or "in the zone"......but, to my thinking, this element is an indispensable component of the perfect cut.
