Space Opera

Cherry sphere on burl base. Turned carved, woodburned, then painted. The irregular layout for the segments has a weave pattern that sets the tone. A lot of colors have been applied, but it has a monochrome appearance. A small bead was added to the base.

Nice one, Linda !!! Do I see an M.K. influence here? Mike did a series of decorated spheres mounted on non-conforming triangular/geometric bases about 10 years ago.

Yes definitely Michael had an influence. I have admired his work for a long time. Recently I had an opportunity to spend a few hands-on classes with him.

Yes, I know ... that is why I mentioned it. I did a collaborative decoration on one of his spheres quite a few years ago.
You definitely have your own spin on this one and made it your own ... love the colors! Also like the look of the outer ring/cut around the cup cutter domes.

That one is one I really like. Simple to do - with a larger cup cutter cut in deep enough for ring then a smaller cup burr for full depth cut.

That's what I thought. I use a micromotor tool when using cup cutters for its high speed, but it loses torque to the point of stopping on the larger ones, unless I switch to my flex-shaft tool. Since you didn't give the size of the sphere maybe it's smaller than I assumed.

This has come together nicely Linda. I love the presentation of the sphere on a tilt and the natural base simply rocks! I’m a fan of those double cup burr details as well.
