200mm square Pohutukawa The turning on these pieces is about 255 of the effort required to finish them
As Pohutakawa is so hard it takes ages to brand the work copper leaf ,airbrushed lacquer finish
Comments welcome
Terry, as I've said before, these signature pieces of yours are some of my favorites. What finish did you use on the bowl, and would it work as well on Kauri?
Hi Kurt ,The bowl I lacquer about ten spray coats ,I sand with oil that helps bring out the beautify of the timber then start building up the lacquer sanding with 1200 grit inbetween each coat .I don't want the finish to look plastic so I use 25% Gloss But I do want depth to the finish like looking in a pound .
These wings take a hammering when turned so no kauri is to brittle.I have made some larger pieces

Out of Kauri but the wings are left 1/4 inch thick
You really need a timber that has the growth rings almost touching
Allot of thought has to go into the ornamentation of the grain so that the grain helps support the wings.
Hope this answers your questions
Cheers
