2101 Australian Yellow Box Burl with big void.

Some of you will remember that I was terribly distraught when I roughed this bowl blank. Doing so revealed a huge void within the interior. I had even thought about tossing it and cutting my losses at one point, but many of you inspired me to push on and make something artistic out of a big flaw like this. Needless to say, I was successful, and it ultimately turned out extremely well. It sold on 2/23/2024 for $295.....thank you to all who "gave me the spurs" to push on and finish it. :)

Be sure to see the bottom view, showing the big void in the next photo...

Super job Odie! I know you like clean perfect wood (me too lol!!) so it was great you stepped out of your comfort zone!
I'm sure sanding was hard!

Ditto, my friend....and, thanks! :) !

Actually, I shop for some flaws in bowl blanks, but what I don't like is big surprises like this one was. It was a happy ending, but totally unplanned. Yes, sanding did present some problems, and as I remember it, there was a bit of power-off sanding by hand with this one. (Not to be unexpected with large voids like this.)
An outside the box form for you Odie!! Did you enjoy your stay out there?
Thanks Russ.....:)

I'm glad to have the experience this one gave me.....for sure!

Sorry, I don't understand your question..... :(

Because you were glad for the experience, you understood my question! I’ve been looking at your bowls for years now….not sure I’ve ever seen this form before…..it’s where the wood took you.

I like this one a lot odie, firstly great rescue job, but I particularly like the way you raised the piece with the base being part of it

Thanks Peter..... :)

It was about the only option I had with such a large void that was a complete surprise! If I had known it was there, it would have made it possible to flip it and eliminate most of the void.....because it would have been in the center of the waste area inside the interior. I guess you might consider it a stroke of luck that it turned out the way it did......depending on how you would compare the final outcome to what was originally planned!
