Quilted Maple Salt & Pepper

Quilted Maple Salt & Pepper

The body of these pieces is quilted big-leaf maple from the west coast of BC, Canada. Each is finished with a tung oil/polyurethane blend and then buffed with the Beall System. The spheres on top are turned from BC paper birch wood, stained with India ink and finished with rattle can lacquer. The mill has a CrushGrind mechanism and the shaker has a stainless steel top and a rubber bung in the bottom.
David,

I really like your sets. This one is less striking than the red ones, but still very beautiful. I have a pair of grind mechs waiting in my shop for a potential Christmas gift and your style has given me some great ideas.

How tall are they?

Great work! ......... JL

Hi JL and Ronald,

Thanks a lot for your nice comments. The CrushGrind mechanism that I use is the 10" version, so the overall height is about 11-1/4" or so by the time you add the spacing under the mechanism to allow the mill to sit flat, plus the extra material in the topknot to encase the top of the shaft and hide it. This height will still fit under the shelf in most kitchen cupboards so that's one reason why I tend to use the 10" mechanisms. I hope this helps.

I agree that this one is less striking than the coloured ones before, but my wife decided that the more natural look of this set would make a better wedding gift for this particular couple! ;-) I think I've used up this design, now it's on to something different.

David

Beautiful!  I really like the black contrasting with the showy maple grain.
