I was 13 when it happened. News didn't travel at the speed of light as it does today and I likely read about it in Readers Digest. 20 miles or so south of Iceland proper an erupting volcanic island breached the surface of the North Atlantic. The scientists named it for Surtr, a mythical Norse fire giant with a blazing sword....the island of Surtsey and I was fascinated.
A birch crotch with plenty of voids which I carried further then pyrotextured and colored with dyes and Gilders paste. An aluminum sword, chosen more for workability, finishes the piece. 7-1/2" x 8". Thank you for looking!
