I’d like to know if anyone has a good source for nichrome wire? Googling the Internet provides lots of hits but I would prefer to select a company that someone has had good experience with.

Cheap sources abound.....free, at garage sales, or at Salv. Army Stores

If you don't want to pay much (or anything) for nichrome wire, you can scrounge it from old toaster-ovens, aquarium heaters, and even discarded hair blower/dryers. The heating wire can be 'recycled' from any of these units, and will be present in them in different thicknesses. The "naked" nichrome wire is often supported by thermal insulators to keep the coils evenly spaced - this is the best indication that this is the nichrome wire you are looking for. Disassemble the unit carefully and re-shape the salvaged nichrome wire without very sharp bends or kinks, and you're in business. Just don't use any copper wire (easily identified by its color, presence as stranded wire, with insulation, and much easier ability to be cut) in place of nichrome, or you'll have a "high current fest" of potentially wire-melting proportions.

Where is Bob or Renay at mte?

Guess I am a day late or $ short. Tried to contact Mollie's recommended source mtebob@sbcglobal.net and have not had a response from them. Are they still around? Just wondering.:)

I have also purchased nichrome wire at MSC:

Current MSC Catalog page 1887 for Nichrome wire ----> CLICK HERE

The 1/8 lb. spools provide a LOT of wire for making burner tips.....

Nichrome wire

Thanks Steve, Alan & Rob for your help. I looked at all of your sources including msc. I found another source through the internet which supplies the wire in 10' rolls - more than I will probably ever use. They also have a lot of information relative to the normal wire useage. http://www.nichromewire.biz/28_30ft.html

I never did hear from Bob either. Thanks again.
