I see that AAW has a Demonstrator Directory, and I got an anonymous note that I should look there to get "good" demonstrators for our club. Is it pretty reliable? (reliable = turners who are good presenters/instructors)

That shouldn't be mistaken to be some sort of tacit approval of the demonstrators listed. There is no vetting process to give a demonstrator some sort of good housekeeping seal of approval. All it means is that AAW members who wish to offer their services as demonstrators can chose to be listed in the directory.

The directory is fairly reliable but there's is no peer review.
Be aware that people list themselves along with specialties.

Hi Jamie:

The current demonstrator directory on the AAW website is a listing of all folks who have indicated they are demonstrators. Like Al and Bill indicated, being listed in the current AAW demonstrator directory is not an indication or endorsement of a demonstrator's abilities.

Under our VISION 2020 strategy, AAW has a new demonstrator scheduling tool in development. The new data bank will help chapters easily identify and schedule demonstrators for events. The data will include demonstrator contact information, schedule, fees, and projects types, as well as sample demonstrator contracts. While I cannot be sure when the new tool will be unveiled, we expect it will be a win-win for both chapters and demonstrators. Look for this new tool in the coming months!

Cheers!
Kim

Kim, thank you for that heads-up, such a tool will be very welcome I'm sure. The next person in our chapter who gets elected at the end of November and has to schedule for the 4th week in January could actually start investigating in October!:D or even September. I started emails several days ago -- this is a really bad time of the year to try and get people's attention.:(
