A lot has been posted recently about the future and youth Programs.
The AAW has hundreds of youth programs and adding more all the time. These run periodically throughout the year reaching hundreds of young turners. While the Symposium Youth Program is a terrific event and gets a lot of press, you should know there is WHOLE lot more going on:
1. Many of our AAW chapters have organized youth programs where woodturning education takes place throughout the year. Most of these clubs use the AAW "Young Turner" resources (see Below)
2. Financial support: each year dozens of Education Opportunity Grants are awarded to chapters, members, and schools for Youth education.
3. AAW Youth Program - http://www.woodturner.org/community/youth/
This is a set of resources for teaching and includes two levels of achievement certificates.
Students completing Four projects are awarded the "Journeyman certificate" by the local chapter and a free 1 year membership to AAW by the AAW.
AAW member, Dave Bowers and his volunteers put this program together.
it is a terrific resource with 15 class projects and tips for teaching.
4. While not directly related too AAW several of the craft Schools have youth training classes. One example, next week Patrick O'brien teaches an Intergenerational class in woodturning 5 adults 5 youth. The connection to the AAW is: Patrick used the resources of the AAW and two of its local chapters the Capitol Area and Chesapeake extensively to get where he is today. Patrick is passionate about woodturning and may well have found a way without the AAW but...
