Recently I have been using a small air bag like this https://www.amazon.ca/Calculated-In...r+bag+for+lifting+door&qid=1622556770&sr=8-12 to raise heavy blocks to centre height for mounting on the spindle of the lathe. Mine allows about 1 1/2 inches of travel. If I need more, I just add an appropriate sized board under it.

That is a great idea. In another thread someone mention using inner tubes for the same task.

These air bags are a great tool to have available. Not only can they lift heavy items, but they can do so with finess. I use one to lift the canister filter of the DC in to place.
