I am a pure hobbyist - I make far more sawdust than anything useful
I live in Rural New Zealand in roughly the middle of the North Island.
I found this forum while trying to find what was wrong with my Trend Airshield pro battery.
I had erroniously assumed the charger was a smart charger, and have killed the battery - New one ordered as I must have lung protection
My shop is a crowded mess as I have way too many tools for the space. I moved here from a much larger one a few years ago and still trying to get a layout that works without giving up too many tools.
I fear its time for me to specialise and turning is likely to be the winner and the thicknesser, table saw, jointer, router table etc may have to go to the son.
I bought a cheap second hand lathe - a Carbatec (rebranded cheap chinese job) the plus was it is floor standing (on tin legs I had to repair) and came with 40 chisels, half of which were decent - not listed in add, and sharpening jig, and 2 hp dust extracter and a Nova chuck - so overall a real win.
I have outgrown the cheap lathe and its starting to give me the <proverbials> and am saving for either a Laguna or a Nova - all suggestions gratefully recieved.
I am left handed so the Nova Neptune Max in particular seems attactive with the flexibility to rotate the headstock to get easier arm movements - can any one comment on this as to if it "really" works please.
In the mean time I am trying to train myself to be ambidextrous.
I have spent a lot of time spindle turning, mainly with the skew chisel, making boxes etc. and I am just trying to master bowl turning at present (or at least reach middling competency).
I also am over 70, and officially a grumpy old b@#$%d so well suited to turning imho.
