I'm not the official meeter and greeter but welcome. Not sure how many folks are from Hawaii here. I'm from Ohio. The newsgroups have become useless. Lot's of good info here and if you haven't checked it out, WoodCentral.com has a great and active turning forum as well as World of Woodturners or WoW.

Thank you for the warm welcome. Sorry for delayed reply, I was off island getting back surgery (2 herniated discs), and just returned. Looks like i'll be back turning wood again in no time after some recuperation rest, and physical therapy. I just got back from the first Hawaii vacation and spent most of the time in Maui. My wife is now addicted to Hawaii and surfing. We saw some great turnings on display at the airport and in some stores while touring.
We also went to Oahu to meet a turner near Sunset Beach. He has a store with his turnings on display and some great chocolate in Haleiwa. He uses a Stubby lathe, and I am manufacturing a custom reeding, veining, duplicating fixture for that lathe. I hope to go back to Hawaii to visit his shop and see my creation in action. Good excuse anyway!
Maybe you need a deep hollowing system to keep your back from getting injured again and I can have another excuse to visit paradise! You lucky Devil!

I too had a dystectomy (sp??) and was joyously surprised to discover how much yoga has helped in healing, strengthening, and more importantly preventing further damage.

Aloha Keith, next time you come Maui bring along some Osage Orange, and other wood blanks, and we can work out a trade. Messed up my back at work doing heavy lifting at work, you know, you've done it 1000 times before with no problem, then this one time something pops... 🙁 Glad to hear you, and wife enjoyed your vacation here. I used to surf Sunset in my younger daze. My surfboard hasn't gotten in the water for a while too so maybe i'll call it physical therapy, and get wet. What's the name of that turner on the North Shorer? May know him. I'll check out your website for stuff for the deep hollowing system, maybe your trip here can be a business expense tax write off... 😉

I raised on Oahu in Kailua been living on Maui almost 9 nine years, used to live Kealakekua side, actually Honalo right before Kainaliu behind Teshima's Resteraunt, back in early '80s. You might know my old buddy from Kailua Tommy Varese, I think he belongs to the Big Island AAW chapter. I get plenty friends down Nahiku/Hana side, what is your family's name? I recently about 8 months ago got into a bunch of Kou so if you know, and see Tommy tell him I said "eat your heart out" 😀

Part of the problem with having larger muscle-mass is being more prone to loss of flexibility (especially with aging), and this is also why there is more risk for injuries.
Increasing strength and flexibility helps prevent the injuries. Talk to your physical therapist about yoga or some type regular flexibility training.
It’s amazing how it has helped me. I have far less flare-ups, can actually stand-up straight, have regained 90% use of my left-arm, back on a bicycle now and can easily handle a chainsaw or turn. Although i've never regained some muscles in my neck, with the yoga training, my body seems to have compensated by strengthening others.

Let me know what you think about my website and tools. My wife is dying to write-off a trip to Hawaii - anything for Hawaii, she is "all ate up with it" as they say in Oklahoma! I will certainly look for some native Oklahoma wood for the next trip to Maui with you in mind!
