Well thought I would post a turning here as I haven't in a while. I do a lot lurking , reading and studying on here. This is a Amboyna Burl that I purchased and turned a vase with a lid which has a ebony finial on it. It is 6 1/4" tall and 4 1/4" across. With the lid on it is 7 3/4" tall. It was finished with Minwax Antique Oil and buffed.

nice work and great finish! :D

do you have any sources for your burl?

Thanks for the comment. I actually got it off the big bay auction. I think if was around $35 for a 6 X 6 X 8 inch piece. I don't find it to often at that price.

Amboyna

This place is expensive up the ying-yang - but I know they carry some good quality Amboyna.

www.cookwoods.com

They are in my hometown, and I typically visit them every couple of months to get accent pieces like ebony, cocobolo, redheart, and purpleheart.

$$$$$$$

WOW! that stuff is more expensive than gold! probably some of the prettiest wood blanks i have ever seen, do they have a lay-away plan? :D

Don't say I didn't warn ya... :-)

As far as I know, they don't have a lay away plan...

I haven't turned/bought amboyna, but I have found some pieces on ebay and other LHWD (Local hardwood dealers) that were of decent price.

Thanks for the comments. I did the finial after watching Cindy Drozda's DVD on finials. Lots of pratice followed but she made it pretty easy to follow. This was fun one to do.
