NOt an excuse Ed, just fact. I doubt we have 126 adults in my community of age to partake in woodturning as a hobby/interest. Why don't you come up here and see what I'm talking about. I'd enjoy your company.
I'm not sure I see how the school woodshop has any bearing on the potential for a woodturning club. I'd guess the average age at my club to be well over 50 years old. I think most of the guys are probably out of school by now. You may not be able to find 126 interested turners in your community, but there still might be enough for a club.
I've been there Ed, its a great club. They meet during the week and its impossible to attend and still do the work thing. I will be retiring next July, maybe that will work out.
