As a follow up to the thread about chain saws I'd like to specifically focus on the chain oilers. I have a Stihl MS-170. When I first used it I used Platinum Bar and Chain Oil from Stihl. There is no oil adjustment so I thought I'd switch to a heavier oil and see if that made a difference. I switched to plain Husqvarna bar chain oil which is thicker but I still get a mess and have to clean frequently. I wonder if cutting the bottom off the cover as was suggest in the other thread might help? I'm afraid the gummy mixture still wouldn't wouldn't come out. I don't use this little saw on large trees, rather just trimming. Cleaning is hard because the material is so gummy with oil. I end up using tooth brushes and toothpicks. The saw has to be stored with the oil cap up or oil will leak out and make a mess. Appreciate your experience with chain saw bar oil and cleaning.

When I bought my Husqvarna the dealer told me to open the oil cap to relieve any pressure inside the oil tank to keep it from leaking. It seems to work, but I always sit it on a small piece of cardboard just in case it leaks.

I purchased a little 6" battery operated chainsaw the other day from Amazon (Mini Chainsaw 6 Inch, Cordless Mini Chainsaw Battery Powered with 24V 10000mAh Rechargeable Battery, 2.57Lb One-Hand Use Electric Chainsaw, Handheld Chainsaw for Tree Trimming Wood Cutting). Well it came yesterday and I charged the batteries and took it outside to try it. I cut 15 branches from 1" in diameter to 6" in diameter on just one battery and there was still battery power left. I bought this so my wife could put down her bow saw. I will teach her how to safely use it, but I must say what it did was pretty impressive for $56! We'll see over time what happens and how long it lasts but at the getgo it is again impressive.

I have two Stihl saws, MS391 and MS440. After a days cutting I take the cover off, remove the bar, remove the chain from the bar and blow out everything with compressed air. I run a putty knife down the bar channels to remove any build ups. I remove the air filter and blow it out. I have no problems with oil or gas leakage or with starting the saws. I think a great deal of the problems people have is due to poor maintenance.

Paul, do you have a lot of oil soaked sawdust or is it pretty clean? When I used my gas saws the sawdust was pretty dry and would blow out easily, this little saw is full of gunked up of oil soaked sawdust. I have to use brushes. If I used air pressure I'm afraid the whole shop and me would be covered with greasy sawdust. I guess my point is the little saw seems to use too much bar chain oil. Maybe it has too to work effectively. As mentioned I've switched to a heavier oil and it's a little better but still I've got a huge mess inside very quickly. I have to stop and clean things up frequently. I also have a 16 inch DeWalt battery chain saw and that doesn't seem to have the same issue.

Thanks Paul, the MS-170 is an entry level saw and doesn't have the adjustments like a professional saw. I'm not able to find any mention of an adjustment in the manual. That's why I'm trying a heavier oil. So far the oiler works with the heavier oil.

Been looking at your post all week. Does your title mean a robot is using the chainsaw? If we used your title on a traditional chainsaw, would it be a gas operated chainsaw? You are the operator. LOL Just a bit of humor
