I actually watched this one a while back. I spend too much time on You Tube..... Cooking shows, turning channels, woodworking/hand tool channels, and miscellaneous stuff....

The video that started this thread showed some of the methods of getting the logs out of the woods so I thought this might be interesting.
This photo was enlarged from a post card that my father had and he was able to identify the men in the picture. The photo was taken in Becker county MN near the source of the Mississippi before 1920 long before the electrical grid reached the area near where I currently live and the 2 farms that my grandfather owned.
The machine is called a "Steam hauler" and was used on ice roads to move the logs to lakes that could connect with saw mills in the spring . The Steam Hauler used a track system that was later adapted for use on bulldozers. There is a restored and operating Hauler in the state of Maine if anyone is interested.

I enjoyed watching the primitive logging. The film producers screwed up though. At about 11:40 minutes a modern car is seen passing in the background while they were transporting the log on a cart.

The rural area where I grew up had a guy who was known as the last of the horse loggers. My dad let him keep his horses in an out building and we'd bring buckets of water and bales of hay for the two horses. As farms were being cut up into smaller plots the horses were used to selectively thin wooded areas. Bulldozers would tear up the land, but the horses could drag logs out barely disturbing the landscape.
 
Doug, I lived in a farm community in central Kentucky for about 6 years. There were still farmers who used horses to snake logs out of the woods and cultivate tobacco patches.
 
In the video they initially used a logging arch to move the log out of the woods until a wheel broke.
In about 2003 I had built my own logging arch that has 30" between the wheels and a 2 speed hand crank winch.
I have hauled logs up to 13 feet long that barely fit between the wheels and pulled it with an Arctic Cat 300 four by four with a 3 range manual transmission.

This picture was one of the first logs I hauled out and since then I added a cradle to hold the front of the log and a bracket to raise the pully for the lift strap so that I can lift the log higher.
