Hello,
I’m Ben, I fell into carpentry out of high school, my father built custom homes here on Kauai. We had a hurricane 3 months after graduation and I went into the workforce. That was 1992. I got a used grizzly lathe I think 12x36 and used it to turn resin fishing lures about 15 year ago. I am passionate about most all fishing. A couple years ago a customer ask me to turn a couple legs out of ipe he had for a built in desk I was building for him. Probably not the best project to start spindle turning on. After a steep learning curve I pulled it off. Unbelievably they asked me to paint these beautiful things white. The desk turned out great and I found that I really enjoyed turning wood. I started turning bowls right away, what a deep rabbit hole I find myself in now. Any how here I am. Happy to meet fellow woodworkers who have found themselves deeper in this woodworking world than they thought they could possibly end up. I still have the grizzly, a jet vs1221 and am in the process of acquiring a vega2600 that I’m going to try to bring back to its former glory. I don’t know what else to say but here is the last bowl I finished, Milo that was given to me by a friend from his discard pile. It’s about 10 inches across 3 high.

Welcome!
Milo, Monkeypod, Koa… such nice wood to work with there in Hawaii!
Nice bowl!

Do you ever find larger pieces of Paper Mulberry, also called Paperback Mulberry? (Brousonettia papyrifera).
We met a kapa lele on Oahu whom I would like to make a bowl for if I can find a piece. Doesn’t grow here 😕

Friends are on Kauai right now. We’ve been to Maui and Oahu but have yet to make it to Kauai.

Hello Pat,
I am not sure I know the tree. I’ll have to look up some good pictures. I have some tree trimmer friends that I can ask to keep an eye out for it once I know the term they call it. I’ll keep you in mind.

Welcome Ben! To bad you have to live where some of the best wood ever grows! More photos of your beautiful work! I'd love a side view of that one.

Kauai is our favorite! Love the interior and canyons. Saw more wildlife there than anywhere else. And really loved the coastal trails.

I do lament the chance of going back to Che Paul restaurant on Maui after I read it closed. Even the carrots there were memorable!
