I thought I'd start a new post, I found this maple log about 15 years ago. The entire outside of the tree was this way and spent 10 hours cutting and slabbing it out. As I have found with other figured maple, the figure can be only about 8"-10" deep around the outside. It lead me to believe that some figuring is caused by stress on the tree. Nothing scientific, just my opinion. You can tell it was spring as the bark was perfect to peel off. Anything I have turned from it has sold, just have a few pieces left.

All the different names, for pretty much the same thing, confuse me, and I don't need any help in that direction.... Arborists call it 'reaction' wood. There are some trees that have a genetic disposition towards developing lots of figure/ripple/reaction. The whole tree can have lots of figure. Saw one black walnut that was that way, but a local furniture maker got it all.... You can take grafts from birds eye maple trees, and some of the resulting trees will have the birds eye figure and some won't. Just because I guess....

Good name for it. I had some maple for firewood and got a nice blank for this platter from it. Made a nice wedding gift for my nephew and his bride.

Here's another interesting maple pattern. Curly figure, but it comes to points in the middle of the board and weaves into other curl lines.
