I know I have written too much lately but had to share this with all.
While putting a one inch recessed foot on a little red oak ball urn ( ball about 3 inches round) I used a forester bit to recess the foot to find I had pur a tiny hole through the bottom. I just couldn't put that urn to dust so I filled the hole, sanded it carefully and decided to paint flat black the inside of the urn and the inside of the recessed foot to mask the mistake.
First time for me to hide a problem but just couldn't throw it in the barrel.
Am I awful for that, probably my wife will steal it anyway.
I know everyone who ever turned a closed mouth bottle has done the same thing and thrown it away but my heart just loved that little urn.

Never done that (yeah right). I did however use india ink to color the inside and it bled through to the outside. Man I hate it when it does that. I've had the point of a drill bit poke through the lid of a box when drilling for a finial. I now use a milling cutter to drill the holes, it doesn't have a point.

If it looks ok and won't deteriorate later, it is ok. What famous woodturner (?) said something to the effect that woodturning is the art of hiding your mistakes?

If there is an up side to a mistake, it's the creativity involved in fixing it. I think we've all had screw-ups that have led to an even more interesting piece. I know I have. Quite rewarding sometimes.

My last mistake repair ... err ... I mean design opportunity ... resulted in something that looked much better than the original design ... and I learned a new decoration technique in the process.
