Interesting that they use all 4 'limbs' for turning... Must be a wax finish of some sort. Also, saw a small finial at about 5 minutes. He does seem to use scrapers for everything too.

Oh yeah, this is such a cool video! My feet and knees ache just watching. I like how different the techniques are, yet they still rely on the same physical principles as western-style turning. I would love to see one of these bowls up close.
Thanks for sharing this John. That is amazing on so many levels that OSHA would have fits about, but at the same time it's a great saving of raw materials.

I’m wondering if the finish is button shellac rubbed on with friction? Is that a thing?
that's what I was thinking - it looks like he might be rubbing with a liquid later - could be alcohol to smooth it out? It's sort of like friction polish in reverse.
