I have decided to give box making a serious go. I have in the past made some rather ornate boxes with heavy embellishments, bamboo and Mother of Pearl inserts etc.
This time less elaborate more along the line of just turned. But then I realized all my tools are for large hollow vessels or semi closed bowls, large statement pieces really and far from suitable box making gear.
So to the other side of the shop, engineering. I maintian a small engineering shop in order to build my own gear. Its profitable in as much as it saves me a small fortune, tips and cutters are readily available and at the end of the day you get what you want, rather than adapting someone elses design to your needs.
A small set of HSS scrapers on 10mm bar with a compoite glued up handle out of scrap
Two small hollowers 8mm dia carbide semi cup tools on DIY stainless handle, not quite finished. I have use bycycle handle bar tap, that will have shrink wrap tube to secure the ends. I have canted the carbide cutters over roughly 40' so I can ride the bevel, well sort of, it does work. The learning curve can be tragic if you rush it.
As its Christmas I may not get time pick the shrink wrap tube, so its on going into the New Year.
