Steel can bung up the end of MT when you knock it out. Of course to do that, you have to hit it really hard. I made a new knock out bar for my lathe and added a bit of brass (brazing rod) to the end for that reason.
I drilled and tapped the knock out bar on every lathe I’ve owned since I started turning. Got the habit from a machinist friend. Just find a brass screw that’s about the right size, dill and tap.

I made my own knockout rod from 3/8" brass stock cut to size with a simple turned handle. I also made skinnier knockout rod from 1/4" brass stock so that I can adjust the point on my Robust live center without removing the center from the tailstock.
