I wonder if any of your clubs have regular safety classes, rules, or credentials for using a chainsaw at club-related events? If so, do you have examples of protocols, curricula or training requirements you could share? Thanks!

This is what we use at work. It is more focused on loggers but the training I went to had some homeowners. I know you are not in their area but you may be able to contact them to see if there is any literature they can share or if they know of other training organizations.

Attached is a handout from a class I did several years ago for our club.

We've used the video of that class a couple times since, but haven't recently. We do try to have a couple experienced sawyers on hand when we do our annual wood lot cleanup day, and offer hands-on instruction to those who need/want.

The class was based on a course I co-developed for the local boy scout camps, which in turn was based somewhat on the inter-agency (forest service etc) S-212 course I took (too many years ago).

I did not include felling in the woodturner's course - it's just too complex without a lot of time and hands-on practice. Especially when factoring in that the trees woodturners are most likely to be tempted by are old/diseased/dying deciduous trees with large crowns in an urban environment (houses, power lines, people, etc).
