Collection plates

In a thread on the Jimmy Clewes oriental box I mentioned that I had made fifteen collection plates for our new church sanctuary. It was requested that I post a picture. I will also post a picture of just one plate. They were made from 12/4 mahogany and are 13 1/4" in diameter and are 2 3/8" high. I designed them so that they would stack nicely while on the altar waiting to be passed. The picture shows just eight of them.

The ladies of the design committee had a hard time finding a fabric that matched the fabric of the pews and was suitable for the bottom of the plate. They found a suede cloth that was just right but it had a white backing. I took a brown Sharpie magic marker and went round the edge of the bottom so that white would not show. It worked!

I found a clever way to center the fabric and that worked nicely. Super 77 Adhesive from 3M holds the fabric very nicely so far.

Just looking at that stack tells me that you must be one heckovaturner. I'm in awe of your apparent precision and control. Too bad that in passing the plate people don't apparently have (take) the time to appreciate its craftsmanship and beauty. (If they did, do you think others might suspect something was going on?)

Thanks, Larry. When I started to refer to the quote I realized that I had completely forgotten who used it, but I plowed ahead anyway.

The plates will be used for the first time this Sunday. Since we will be celebrating a new sanctuary, I am expecting a rather electrifying morning.

Thanks, Jack. Those from the congregation who have seen the plates are almost in awe of them. I told the pastor that I do not need any personal recognition.

After completing the finishing, but before putting the fabric in place I took a little forced time out, and while riding in the ambulance I said a little prayer, "Lord, you know I would like to finish those plates." That evening I had two stents put in, and two days later I walked three miles in the hospital. I went home the next day and was able to install the fabric. The next day they were delivered to the church. And now I feel great from several perspectives.

The fact that the plates stack with perfect spacing shows the precision with which they were matched. It is one thing for plates to all look alike, but how well they "stack up" is quite another matter!

First use

Well, it is a beautiful sunny day in Franklin County, Virginia, "Moonshine Capital of the World". Today is the first service in our new sanctuary and the first time the collection plates will be used. They were made with the children's chorus in mind, "Deep and Wide", which I have jokingly accused the pastor of requesting. Maybe today instead of "Git R done!" it will be "Fill 'em up!"

I hope that each of you have as great a day as this promises to be for us.

Beautiful job Ed. A quote that comes to my mind is I Corinthians 15:58 "...Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain."
When I show your pictures to my friends, I can tell them that you and I have the same brand and model bandsaw. By the way Ed, I have used the bandsaw quite a bit and really like it. Thanks again for recomending it to me.

Hi Tom,

Thank you for the kind remarks. My 21" 3 HP LeNeave bandsaw is a pleasure to use. Others have also taken my advice and purchased from LeNeave and all have been pleased. I'm so used to having my counsel overlooked that I am always shocked when someone listens.

Glad that you like your saw and the plates. When the plates were passed this morning I felt an almost paternal interest as I watched them. I admit that I said to myself "Hmm, good-looking plate." Everyone who knew that I had made them made an effort to say something nice.
