In my woodturning collection is a gorgeous piece by Chris Pytlik, who fell off the end of the turning earth last decade. After I started turning 2 years ago, I tried without success to contact him to learn his technique. No luck. I persisted and, amazingly, this week he responded via email and directed me to a site that details his technique: https://www.westbaywoodturners.com/demo_reports/Pytlik_Mar2011.htm

I’ve ordered pipettes and acetone. And I found that bleach—Zinsser. I’ve got TransTint. Almost ready to try.

Here’s the piece I own:

For me the piece dictates whether to flood the inside with dye. If the piece is highly figured I do not apply through the inside. The dye is going to go through where the pores are end grain, some woods have larger pores that allows more dye to flow through. Chris had a lot of different things he does. All my Chris files are on another computer in the house someplace. I had Chris here for a couple days of hands on with my club.
