David has released his schedule for the first half of 2024, 3 day classes at his home in NC. I was able to get in to an Apr class. Didn’t want to be in NC Jan or Feb—too cold for me. Max of 5 students. Should be great.

I attended one of his classes in September, and it was fantastic. I learned a tremendous amount. And his collection of wood art — a Raffan salad bowl serving veggie straws at lunch, a Bill Luce bowl (featured in Ellsworth On Woodturning) holding car keys, a Maloof rocker in the living room — is remarkable, as is his own gallery. I bought a pair of David's tiny Spirit Forms after I got home, after regretting not buying them in person:

But as for *North Carolina* being too cold...

very nice response. I spent 4 years in Durham long ago—but now in S Cal so cold is anything under 70 degrees. But now I’m real stoked about the class!

I grew up in San Diego, but after grad school in Wisconsin, anything above about 10°F is fine with me. Below that is snot-freezing weather, which I find unpleasant, and below that is oh-my-god-the-wind-punched-me-in-the-face windchills, which I really don't like.

Anyway, you'll love the class! I took videos of David's demonstrations, but I wish I had taken more, and that I had kept a notepad handy for all the details I was sure I'd remember but didn't. And one warning: unless you're currently spending 8+ hours at the lathe, you'll probably be physically exhausted at the end of each day. At least I was, and I think my classmates were too. I had hoped to see more of Asheville, but I ended up crashing after dinner each night.

David is a great teachers. I had a week long class with him in1995.
I’ve also hosted him several times for intermediate/advanced classes here in Florida.
The improvement in the students skill is amazing.

It was too cold here yesterday 65 brrrr.
75 today. 85 is my perfect temp.

I was a little worried going into his class, based on his videos and book, that he might be a bit dogmatic or severe, but I couldn't have been more wrong. At the end of his book, he talks about creating a safe space for students to make mistakes, and he really does do this in practice. I expected more ego, but he was just so kind and supportive and humble. Plus he has such evident love for the craft and the work of his fellow practitioners.

I’m also enroll in one of his April classes, I had tried over the years to get into one of David’s classes at Arrowmont but they fill up fast. Hope to get a copy of his book before I go
