One of the guys at the club I started going to brought in a bowl that was half basket. I have never seen anything like it. He is going to have a class to teach us how to make one. I made this bowl for the class. The last picture is the one he made.

Ah! Nice.. I have seen similar work on some youtube channels where they mix in wicker basket weaving with their wood work.. It's one of those items on my "future projects" list.. one of my grandmothers used to collect wicker, I learned basket weaving way back when (about the same time I learned macrame`) I don't think it would be too difficult.. drill spaced holes in bowl rim, glue in your wicker and weave 'em up.. I suppose the hardest part for someone that hasn't done weaving before will be learning the basket weaving techniques.. Looks like your bowl might make a nice start for one..

I saw your other picture, the one you showed us your shavings on a trail. Looks like you are getting some nice shavings, meaning you are controlling the gouges. Next you should try and give your work some design. I would go for a way smaller base and a smooth inside curve that would make it easier to cut in the first place and easier to sand. Richard Raffan has an excellent book on bowl design. Jaques Vissery says that a bowl without design is just firewood, LOL
