Greetings. I’m a reasonably capable flat woodworker whose wife wanted something along the lines of a farm table. I rarely turn her down, but making the legs wasn’t in my skill set. Still, I didn’t want to buy the legs, giving up the right to say that I made the table myself. I bought a starter lathe, destroyed a lot of wood and finally made the legs for this table. For years afterwards, the lathe saw only occasional use until the notion of becoming a better turner recently hit me. I upgraded my lathe (Jet 1840EVS), took a hollow form class at the North Carolina Furniture School and became a YouTube junkie. Now I’ll either get better at this or there’ll be another machine on the used lathe market.

The farmish table, my shop before the lathe upgrade and another flat work example.

Welcome,
nice lookin tables. Really like the lines on the smaller one.

Just did a demo on a Jet 1840. You have sweet machine that is a pleasure to turn on.

if you have not already done so, check out the local AAW chapters in your area.
The face to face experiences beat YouTube.

YouTube is mishmash of the good, bad, and the ugly.

I recommend looking first for videos using AAW video source search directory. These have been reviewed by
AAW volunteers for safe and effective practices.

Welcome to the AAW forum Edward. I am terribly envious of your beautiful spacious shop. Your woodworking is really nice and you did a great job on the table legs. About fifteen years ago I turned a table leg. The blanks for the other three are still waiting to be turned. And the table top is just parked in a corner. One of these days I might get a round tuit.

Now, a few years later...
I did take the good advice, moving the lathe away from the wall, giving me better access. I added two Moffatt lights, upgraded some of my turning tools spent 3 days great with David Ellsworth. I have a long way to go but I have made reasonable progress.
