Evaluating my own work, in effort to give newbies some perspective...

You bet there Charlie.....:)

I was just observing some of the turnings in the "member's gallery", and it seems very apparent that traditional turning isn't much in vogue. This "traditional turning" is what my focus has always been, and it involves very little, or zero embellishments. Not that there isn't some mighty fine embellishments done off the lathe.....but, it's a stark realization that traditional turning, it seems, is very seldom the main focus of the current lathe turners.

Oh well......just an observation.

Brand new here so haven't seen any of your finished work, but I'm curious as to your definition of "traditional turning". My preference in style tends to lean more to a cleaner, uncluttered look. Accent can be good, but I like to keep it to a minimum.

Well for me given what I regularly turn, its gouges to the outside and hollowers and scraping to the inside and depending on the form sanding internally as well.
C&C unwelcome and otherwise. I tend always look for the positive, especially for the beginner. They know the extent of their ability and how things never turn the way its supposed to. As the conversation progresses, they have to ask me for a critique and I tend to look at it from the perspective where I was at a similar time rather than throw 15-20 years of experience at them etc and always try to finish on a positive. I find the negative is ok, and they go away feeling good about the whole process
