My 11yr old has been helping me with pens for several months now and was begging to make a bowl so we tried the other day. I had some walnut logs the shop that were about 2 years old but minimal checking so we tried one of those. Poor kid- it was BONE dry- the gouge tip got pretty warm but it was good practice.

I did a lot of hand holding but he was able to get the rough outside shape down with minimal cleanup on my part. We took turns hollowing.

Since it was dry we went ahead and put some finish on it.

I’m working on finding some green wood for him.

That’s a paper towel dispenser. An old plastic spark (energy drink mix) container that holds 1” wide rolls of shop blue towels. I cut them into sections and load them up in there with a slot- they hang out- perfect for pen finishing. It has magnets glued to the bottom so I can move it to the big lathe if I’m making pens over there.
 
One of my grandson's like to turn. Been a while since we have worked. Another grandson is into hunting and fishing. Both are not cheap hobbies, as we all know.
 
That is awesome man. I have 5 daughters. Only one of them will spend time in the shop actually creating. The other just like to watch me work. My wife is pregnant again, and we are all hoping for a son. Either way we are blessed.

You are blessed! I barely have shop time with our 5 kid crew, you’re going to have your hands full for a while.

Yeah, I’ve learned you can’t pick their interests for them- my oldest has ZERO desire to be in the shop, another son has spent a little time in there but hasn’t picked up the bug yet- although we are slowly working on a scroll saw chess set together. My daughters aren’t quite old enough for shop time yet but we’ll see.

My son in this picture has the bug though. He goes to shows with me, he’s a better salesman than I am ;)
