I’m working on a collaboration with another turner who is turning the (closed) vessels and I’m making the finials on my rose engine lathe. I am seeking something to help guide me with overall size of the finial. In particular, I’m seeking help with proportions of the finial relative to the vessel which the final is atop.

Here is an example of a finial I am considering. (It is a prototype in cherry, so please ignore the burn in the wood’s cuts.)

Proportion is much in keeping with the golden rule and will of coarse depend on the size of the vessel . Cindy is probably the best to look at for this. Proportion is not only height but widths also.
Here is a starting article and just search you will find many more by Cindy on this topic.

That picture is so big, I can't see it all at one time on the screen, and have to scroll up and down. To me, the column of the finial is a bit heavy/big. It would help to have a rough idea of the final form, both lid and vessel to get an idea of proportions.

I reached out to Cindy, and she didn’t know of any references for the proportions of the finial as compared to the piece it adorns.

As for the query from Robo Hippy, the prototype I made is about 6” tall. But that can be adjusted; hence my question.

Here is an example from a piece a friend of mine made. The final is the same height as the piece it is setting on. It also follows the golden rule ( 2/3’s and 1/3 ) in height and diameter.64DC1C78-8A77-4414-8151-7B410D4D61AE.jpeg
