What finish do folks apply to the machined parts of a wood turning? I often use sanding sealer on other projects but it then requires de-nibbling with an abrasive pad before applying wax or lacquer, obviously not something you can really do on ornamental work for fear of damaging any crisp edges. I’ve used oil and or wax on routed details. Just wondering what others use?

Depends on the final goal 🤔 If not applying sanding sealer, then the wood will absorb your finish until it is saturated. Also, if you want to preserve a lighter color, sanding sealer before oil will do the trick. It can be done on ornamental work but must be done in stages as the project forms. You could also try to raise the grain before using the sealer.
