I usually turn green wood. Tossing the remnants into the fire is useless. They don't burn.
Normal dry shaving would likely not be much better.
If you are looking for a turner, who generated enough mistakes, to heat a house?....

He lives in Tuscaloosa where it doesn't get super cold for very long. He just wants to start an occasional fire for ambiance more than heat. Wet cut offs would be fine since they will dry fairly quickly (think cut offs from the bandsaw when rounding bowl blanks or that type of stuff). Anything would help him and he would pick them up (I hope that goes without saying but did anyway).
