Hello woodturners.

I lucked out today and bought 3 older glaser tools from an eBay auction. A spindle gouge a bowl gouge and a skew. They look to have been used very little. The kicker, I only payed $135.00 including shipping.

My question is what did the different colored handles represent with these older tools. I'm guessing the steel the tool was made out of? Anyone know for sure?

thanks

AISI A11 steel is also known as CPM 10V or sometimes just 10V in woodturning tool catalogs and advertising. It is made by the Crucible Particle Metallurgy process. It has a high carbon and vanadium content for exceptionally good wear resistance, toughness and strength. The exceptional wear resistance and toughness make it an excellent candidate to replace carbide in many tooling applications.

Note the 9.75% vanadium content. M2 steel typically has a vanadium content of around 2%, if I remember correctly. The data below came from the Crucible Industries web site.
