Go big or go home

This has been around the various forums numerous times, but it is always a hoot to see it again! A marvel in it’s size, construction, and pure ingenuity in the setup to accomplish such a feat! Thanks for re-visiting this, Roger!

Although quite impressive, when you think about the process of making a bowl, 98% of the bowl shape/profile was established during glue-up of the small pieces of plank. They just put the finishing cuts onto the rough shape once spinning. Of course the really impressive part is the remaining 2%, dealing with the huge size and weight.

Theoretically, a truly monumental mega-bowl of this size would be turned from a single piece of wood, which would involve the travesty of felling a tree big enough to supply it. And then finding a dry docked ocean ship that could have it's prop replaced with that big slab, because that's about the only shaft out there that could support it. Now THAT would be impressive!

Imagine what it would cost to glue this up today. I was in Home Depot yesterday and an 8 foot 2x2 was $7.00 Cdn!
2x8x8’ spruce I think was $16.00.
My friend is a manager of the mill out her in B.C. They closed all the saw mills just after Covid last year. They did this under the guise of Covid but to hopefully raise prices in the long run. They wanted to tighten supply right up to nothing. That’s why you guys in Ontario had no deck wood all last summer. When they finally recalled workers lumber had almost tripled.
if you could see the logs stacked up at the saw mill here you’d cry. They are running full out now.

It seems to me that the previous record bowl was recently surpassed. Not sure if this is the one or not, but they did use a tractor to drive the bowl.... Kids and their toys.....

That would make a great ice cream bowl! BTW, heard of a guy who turned down a contractor as the price of lumber went up so much that the original price increased by 30%.
