1. Use mainstream software and pay for it whilst using it

   • Microsoft Office

The only thing I would add is drop MS office in favour of Google Docs.

There are a few REALLY high features in Excel that I occasionally go back for. Otherwise, find no need for Office.
The Google suite does everything else, often better, its cloud based, crash proof and FREE.

I switched 5 years ago and use it professionally for everything.

For efficiency, nothing beats a good slide rule. In addition, for lab work related to physics, the slide rule produces a result based on a realistic number of significant digits (i.e., 3 to 4) that more closely matches the tools used for gathering data. For example, dividing a cup of flour by three with a calculator will result in 0.333333 cups.... , which implies you measured your flour using some theoretically ultra-precise lab instrument, when perhaps you actually used your kitchen measuring cup.

That said, you will not find many slide rules in the accounting department of your bank... Now, where did I leave my Friden comptometer?
