Has anyone used a ferrule to protect rim while hollowing?

I suddenly got this idea—hot glue a short ferrule inside the rim to protect it while hollowing via a small opening . . .

I thin out the top and rim, then work toward the bottom. For the catches I’ve had that ruined a rim, I suspect a metal ferrule would have still at least cracked the rim, but I’ve never tried it.

One too many catches that ruined a nearly complete hf caused me to acquire a hollowing system, which mostly stopped catches, except when I do something stupid…

I know what you mean, especially on small boxes with delicate rims.

No. Just thought of it. Will try in a couple weeks when back from Europe.

I protect it by turning off the lathe before moving the tool in or out.

Of course, but I’ve still occasionally banged my rim and made it larger than intended. I was thinking of an alternative.
