Does anyone have a reliable source for Japanese Hinoki cypress blanks? Specifically, I'd like to turn medium and large bowls, so I'm looking for 4x4x4 and larger pieces.

Thanks
Ed

Looking for an answer as I have never hear of this species of wood. Need to Google it!

Japanese Hinoki cypress
Hi Ed,

A lot of Alaska yellow cedar has gone to Japan as replacement for hinoki. Alaska yellow cedar is not a cedar at all, it's also a cypress, and for a long time it was included in the same genus as hinoki. Yellow cedar is often used in temple construction in Japan when hinoki is unavailable. I haven't turned hinoki, but yellow cedar is fairly common in the Pacific NW.

I just milled about 3/4 of a ton of yellow cedar for bowl blanks. I'm unclear what dimension you're looking for...you're not looking for 4' are you? That big is available, but at a premium usually.

Your best bet is probably Washington for Alaska yellow cedar, but I would be happy to help you track some down here in Alaska if you like.

A 4" X 4" X 4" blank would be ideal for a donburi bowl.

You'll have to explain the "new math" comment. Math was older than dirt when I went to school.
What is a donburi?

I think the new math was in reference to wording that implied turning a 15" bowl from a 4x4x4
But I took it to mean smallest 4x4x4 largest 15" diameter.

@Ed Romson has to go a long way to catch up with my poorly worded posts, especially when I get unnoticed help from Apple. :)
