Hmmm—cushion for friction chuck

Seems like a good idea, but under pressure, will they keep their shape for an extended time? A tiny leak might slowly release the grip on your nearly finished piece....

I have an assortment of scrap wood "plugs" that are just round cylindrical blanks with tenons and rounded corners. I have a couple patches of leather that go between the piece and the plug. (wood slipping on wood will quickly burn a dark circle on your workpiece) The leather protects your piece and provides a little more friction.

looks like it would work well
a definite maybe.

Two concerns I would have.
Will color transfer to light color woods? - probably not
Are they too soft? I want a firm cushion that doesn’t flex and give a spongy support.

A folded paper towel or a square of leather ( a puppy donated a chair back to make a lifetime supply) thin fun foam all work well.
