Shellac formulations are sometimes referred to as universal undercoats. You can put a variety of finishes over shellac once it is dry. It seals the wood pores, drys quickly.

Ha! Just to be clear, and to defend my own honor, I am very much not a member of the woodturning police. Except for calabashes
Your honor remains intact! I've encountered just a very few self acclaimed judges/enforcers over the years - It's been a years but I remember the one I referred to as someone who was always "right" about everything! One thing I value about woodturning (and other creative endeavors) is the joy, openness, sharing, and incredible unique ideas I see everywhere!
I've frequented a number of forums and this has to be the best.
And I've never made a calabash so maybe I'm safe.
I'm not even quite sure what a calabash shape is. OK, I looked it up with Google and found this, the website stating it's "$5700. In stock. Free delivery by Feb 20." Zounds.
