Hollowing system/Boring bar storage

I have a Bosch hollowing system on the way. I am moving from my "jamieson" style captured rig. I have existing hollowing bars from that system and some new ones coming with the Bosch system. I don't want to just have them rolling around in a drawer. Here are the bars I will need to store.

- 1/2" straight Jordan bar
- 1/2" swan Jordan neck
- 3/4" Bosch straight bar
- 3/4" bosch bent bar (swan neck)
- 3/4" extreme access bar (bosch's deeper curved swan neck bar)
- 3/4" swan neck with teardrop scraper
- 1" straight bar
- laser arm

How do you guys store your boring bars and hollowing systems?

If you have pictures that would be great too!!

The boring bars are stored in my router table cabinet drawer, in a sheet of stiff foam where I cut out V grooves (with a razor knife). The Jamieson 1/2", 3/4", and 1-1-1/8" bars fit the foam. I have a couple of 1/2" swan neck bars I made, one mounted in the D-handle, the other laying in the drawer. I use small tackle boxes that fit in other drawers to hold the Jamieson swivel cutters, HSS & carbide inserts cutters, mounting screws etc.

The rear support and the D-handle (with laser support bar, camera and cords mounted) hang from the ceiling with large hooks.. The D-handle is in the upper left of the pic, the rear support is hanging vertically behind the steady rest, right center of the pic. I do have to get a chair to stand on to get the D-handle up/down, that's still ok now but may have to change down the road if when that becomes an issue (lots of things are sure to change with time). I can get the rear support and steady rest down standing on the floor. I have 6-8 various jigs/sleds that hand from the ceiling - no where else to put them.

Why are you changing hollowing systems?

Doug, thanks for the info and photos. I like the idea of hanging the jamieson D-handle from the ceiling. But, unforutnately I'm in a basement shop. My ceiling is too log and that would be a head banger. I can't even recess it up into the joist bay overhead as my small portion of the basement (13ft wide X 22ft long) for a shop has al the plumbing, duct work, etc.

That kind of goes in line with my answer to your question on why I am changing systems. My space is extremely limited as I share the space with the furnace, washer/dryer, water softener, water heater, etc. Then I have to fit lathe, bandsaw, tablesaw, etc into the space. I just don't have a lot of room for storage of tools. The more compact bosch articulated system takes up less space than the backrest & d-handle of the jamieson.

You could make a short wooden handle with set screw, slip a boring bar in, put an eyelet screw in the back end, and let the boring bars hang down, near the wall so you dont run into them..

Another thought - piece of pvc pipe that boring bar fits in, cap the end so the bar doesnt go through, mount vertically on a wall, or even the end of your lathe. Drop the bars in, pull them out. Could work mounted horizontally under a table, bench etc.

Most of my tools fit into pvc pipes, set in a box at an angle, under the lathe bed and between the legs. You can see the handles of the tools sticking up in the pic.

My hollowing bars are stashed with the rest of my turning tools in a PVC rack on the wall behind me (as I stand at the lathe). I put a handle in a PVC pipe, and group like-sized hollowers in another pipe. They're on the right end in this picture.

Sometimes the handles have tools in them, sometimes they're empty. And I now have some 3/4" tools and so the hollowing has taken over more real-estate.

I don't have a picture of the storage for my (Trent Bosch) stabilizer (with laser/camera arm) (and I'm not at home, so can't just run down and take one). But it's basically made from a 2x4 cut down and screwed to the wall. There are 3 holes drilled to accept the big Allen head screws (hinges/pivots) that stick out of the bottom of the arms. That keeps it in place.
 
I only have a 9 x 12 lathe room with a 2436 1way. Space is always been a premium. I have a Jamison like system where my boring bars are stored in my tool cabinet draws. I have a stock bar, his heavy duty Bb and the dennis Stuart in the draws. The d handle and the capture bars are hung on the wall near the dust collector on the far right. and the laser arm is hanging on the electrical panel. Ja gotta get creative. I also have a bigger Clark system with 30”, 60 and 90 inch bb. That and the Clark systems hardware is hanging on the wall behind the dust collector. I know everyone’s situation is different. There is one bar at the back of the top drawer. This works very well to stop the rattle of all tools and protect the edge. I use Kaizen foam in all my drawers where lots of lose or sharp parts are stored.
