I got my Thompson 3/8" detail gouge today and am unsure how deep to drill the hole into the wooden handle, what is your recommendation? Thanks

How deep to put a 3/8" detail gouge into a wooden handle?

2 " to 2-1/2 ought to be okay......should not be that much stress on a 3/8" detail gouge, like roughing out a bowl with a bowl gouge.
According to the Thompson website (http://thompsonlathetools.com/faq/) the tang is 2 inches long:
On the 3/8 and ½ diameter tools the shank is 2 inches long. The 5/8 and ¾ diameter tools are 2-1/2 inches in length. The 1-1/4 inch SRG have a ¾ inch diameter shank that is 2-1/2 inches long. All tangs are 2 inches long. On the 1/2 and 3/4 inch scrapers and skews the tang will fit in a 1/2 inch nose. The larger scrapers and skews will fit in a 5/8 nose.

About 2" to 2½" inches is typical for store bought tools that come with handles ... and, that's what I do for the handles that I make.

also if I have a tight fit I don’t glue the tool in.

I there is actually a mark on the Thompson tools shafts for how deep you should seat them. A very slight diameter change.

I guess I should have opened it up and looked at it before I posted, 2" is where the change is, made handle today, waiting for tung oil to dry, putting it in tomorrow.. Thanks for the replies.
