I am not so sure that all these recommendations to throw your sandpaper away applies to Abranet. I thought the whole point of Abranet was that it lasts a very long time, thus justifying its higher price.

I use abranet often. I watch for a stream of sanding dust. When I don’t see it I toss the abrasive.
I get the point, as the analogy applies to sandpaper. Good point.
As for a direct answer to the question.....I sharpen my gouges long before they get dull!

Our club had a zoom demo with Glen Lucas and he said something about using sandpaper like someone else is paying for it and it stuck with me. Trying to put that into practice but the cheap in me keeps coming out. I need that therapy session.Howdy Lamar
That maxim is as old as the hills! It's a tough one to overcome, because most of us have an engrained need to be thrifty. The only way to overcome this, is to go against instinct for a time, until the point where the benefit is more obvious.
I probably went for thirty years sanding with used sandpaper......before I finally wised up!
Guess it doesn't matter how long it takes, as long as the process eventually ends with.....enlightenment!

You can believe me when I say that I went through the same motions and emotions as everyone else does. I know how it is to keep sandpaper and discs for longer, even much longer than the maxim suggests. The benefits are just not readily apparent, because the sandpaper is still leaving a trail of dust, but the performance that could be there, just isn't.
