My daughter bought me several pieces of wood for my birthday off ebay. They are in several different sizes. Some are 1X1X10, 2 1/2 X 2 1/2, 6 X 6 X 2. I love getting them but what do I make out of them. This is, also, a question for getting wood at the club wood grab. It's nice but what do you turn the piece into? I have looked at magazines and books for ideas but came up short. Do I just practice filials or what? Any help would be usefull. Thanks.
 
I turn lots of small things and that wood would be perfect. Don't think about having to use the whole piece. Cut a chunk off and turn just that. Cut it in half or quarters and glue it back together to get a different shape.
 
The 6x6x2 will make a nice small bowl, the 2x2 makes nice small boxes, the 1x1 makes nice pens, key chains, miniture boxes, doll house vases, lamps, dishes, goblets, .... anything you can make large, can be made small. Try it ... it is fun, challenging, and does not take as long to produce your piece as the larger projects. :)
 
I've found myself over run with scraps of nice wood that I couldn't bring myself to toss. I do make 'craft' items as low end priced things to sell with my bowls, but don't make segmented ones. Early this year some left over and underused synapse in my brain came to life and I tried gluing some of those scraps together to make a long enough piece that could be used to make a bud/flower vase, pepper grinder, or something else. It's a little more work, but the results can be quite good. Our first show isn't until next weekend, so I've no idea about saleability, but I think they'll go.
