Thanks for the information. Yes, I'm aware of the VL240. There was a place in Las Vegas that carried it for awhile, Woodworkers Emporium, but that place went out of business.

The closest for now is "branches to bowls", in Canada:

I'd kind of like to have the VL240, but haven't pulled the trigger. I've come close a couple of times, though.

Ever since I got wise and built myself some hip rests, the swivel head lathe doesn't seem as much of a "necessity" as it once seemed. As great as the VL240 seems to be, that one feature is the single thing that is better than the Vintage Australian Woodfast lathe that I do have. Several years ago, I purchased a Robust Sweet 16 dogleg banjo.....so, that particular problem with the original Woodfast banjo has long since been solved.

Sure. I've found from experience that is is good to be satisfied with what you have, otherwise all the looking and wondering and purchasing can take away from the enjoyment of turning.

Hmm, might have to check out Woodworker's Emporium again. I know they closed their retail store, but thought they still did on line stuff. Hoping they come up to the Oregon Woodturning Symposium in March! I picked up my 240 at the last one they had before all the covid stuff started....

Thanks for the update on Woodworkers Emporium.

After looking around this morning, I'm not seeing anything but leftover Vicmarc inventory being sold. I'm not seeing Vicmarc lathes being retained. If anyone reading this thread is interested, I guess the only way to know for sure, is to call and ask them.

Woodworkers Emporium's owner Christian Brisepierre is a good friend. He has for sure closed the shop and retired, which is too bad because he carried the full line of Vicmarc products and he is a real nice guy. He always had a big booth at SWAT in the same spot. It felt real empty when I walked in the hall and that spot was taken over by someone else. He was there as a meeting participant but not a vendor. What you see from his online store is the leftover inventory.

FYI, Robust makes a top-quality swivel head lathe, the Sweet Sixteen. Sure, Vicmarc makes great products, but now that Woodworker's Emporium has closed shop, product support could be an issue. Robust is in Milwaukee, WI and the owner Brent English is a great guy and really stands behind his products. As far as I know all the woodturner dealers who used to sell other brands have switched to Robust.

Perhaps you are confusing “swivel head” with a tilt away bed? Or the removable bed section?Robust does not make a swivel head lathe.

I did tell Brent that he needs to make an 18 inch pivoting headstock lathe. Thus far, Robust only has sliding headstock, and now, I believe the American Beauty is the only one that slides. He used to make a Liberty lathe which was 16 inch and had a sliding headstock, but that one is no longer made.

Kelly said he asked Brent about making a swivel head lathe, but he wasn't interested at the time. I have the Sweet Sixteen and it does not swivel. Maybe Andy is thinking of the Tilt-Away?
