I'm brand new to woodturning, and have a lot of interest in resin/wood hybrid objects. I've always been interested in the lathe, I find it mesmerizing to watch all the YouTube videos, and just decided one day I wanted to do it. I got myself a Mophorn lathe, set it up out in a shed in my backyard, and started experimenting. Here are 2 eggs I've already turned.

The big red one was the first one I did. I hadn't realized resin would chip so bad while turning, plus it was getting really hot in the shop (in Arizona) so I gave up and just finished it out. Not perfect, but not bad for a first attempt.

The next one is using some cholla wood I found lying around in the yard. I boiled it, then stabilized it, then poured it with some resin and I just finished shaping it and polishing it this weekend. Also added some LED lights, although I'm not exactly sure why.

But all in all, I'm pleased with my results, and have the next ones planned out.

Welcome,
You have done some interesting work. Lots of folks on the forum get into casting,
Is the Mophorn a metal lathe?

On suggestion - if you have not already done so connect with a local club. The Arizona turners is a local AAW chapter that meets in Tempe. Web site says they have a meeting the 17th.
Give them a call. I’m sure they welcome visitors.

It just so happens the Arizona chapter of AAW is having a meeting this Saturday, and I was hoping I'd be able to go. Going to depend on work (I'm a software developer by trade)...

The Mophorn is listed as "Mophorn 12 x 18 Inch Wood Lathe Bench Top Heavy Duty Wood Lathe Stepless Speed Regulation Digital Display" on Amazon, it's the one I bought. I saw it in a Top 10 Lathe list for 2019...
https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B07KP7T9P5/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 I was probably a bit overly enthusiastic, and didn't really need this one but I had the cash at the time. I had a few issues with the spindle thread size when getting an EasyChuck, but overall, I'm happy with it. Truth be told, I've not done anything on the smaller gears, leaving it on the biggest and slowest until I become more comfortable. The whole tenon thing right now is kinda freaking me out... :)

Where I found the Mophorn listed...

I found the spindle thread as 33x3.5m in the Q/A on Amazon.
These are the same threads used on the big ONEWAY machines and a common thread in Europe.
Almost everyone makes things to fit the Oneways so should be plenty of chucks and faceplates available.

These are large diameter spindle threads for a small machine. most lathes that size have 1x8 threads.
Enjoy.

Joe,

Those pieces turned out really nice, If you want to turn some spheres it is pretty easy to make a sphere turning jig that mounts on your lathe.
What compound are you using to polish the surface of your turned resin pieces with?

I just work my way all the way up through the grits, finishing off with micromesh... Then a quick coat of Flitz polish, and I always apply a final coat or 2 of A Touch of Beeswax Wood Preserver since I usually do wood/resin hybrid with a lot of wood showing.
